I challenged the class to think of a country that is 100% dependent on fossil fuels. We were able to determine that island nations in the South Pacific require the import of fossil fuels to power their homes and businesses for electricity. We determined that this must be expensive, high risk and inconvenient. We concluded that the island could be self sufficient if they built solar and wind farms. We watched videos on the Cook Islands, and Tesla's partnership with Solar City and their positive impact on American Samoa becoming 100% self dependent. The students were amazed the cost savings and the positive impact it made to be using renewable energy.
