Citizen Challenge #3: Do You Really Need it?

Article by Can Geo Education

This challenge is asking you to think about which energy-using item you could give up for 24 hours.

Cellphones, tablets, televisions, e-readers, laptops, computers—the amount of energy-using objects in our day is incredible. Energy is required to manufacture these items as well as to use them. Do we really need every single one? Which of them are essential and which are nice to have?

Modeled after one of our 17 Classroom Energy Diet Challenge challenges—Do You Really Need It—this challenge is asking you to think about which energy-using item you could give up for 24 hours.

KEY DATES:

This challenge will run from Monday March 1, 2021 until Friday March 5, 2021 at noon (EST).

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  1. All you need to do is consider the energy-using items that you use on a daily basis and decide which one you can give up for 24 hours.
If you need your laptop for work, that’s not the one to give up! But maybe you don’t need to use your tablet AND your laptop. Or perhaps you’d like to spend a day away from the television—it’s up to you!

  2. Share with us your experience! Let us know which item you are giving up for 24 hours and what you’ll do instead of using that item. If you’d like, you can take a picture of what you’re doing instead of using that item—unless it’s your cell phone that you’re giving up! Submit the name of the item and what you’re doing to [email protected] or leave a reply on our Citizen Challenge #3 social media posts on Twitter (@Energy_Lit or @CanGeoEdu) or Facebook and Instagram (@CanGeoEdu) using #EnergyDietChallenge. Entries must be received before noon (EST) on Friday, March 5, 2021.

WINNERS, PRIZES & ELIGIBILITY

A random draw will take place on the afternoon of Friday, March 5, 2021. The winner will receive a $100 Shell gift card. Prizes will be delivered via courier shortly after the prize draw.

To be eligible to compete in the Citizen Challenges, you must be a resident of Canada over the age of 18. Consult the Rules and Regulations prior to submitting.
