Family Challenge: Waste Not Want Not

Article by Can Geo Education

This challenge will get your family thinking about and tracking how many items they throw away every day – whether that item goes into the garbage, recycling bin, or compost. Then, we challenge your family to come up with ways to reduce that number and see if you can lower it!

We are thrilled to introduce the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge’s first Family Challenge: Waste Not Want Not! This challenge can be done with your family – whether you have children, cats, dogs, roommates or just you! This challenge will get your family thinking about and tracking how many items they throw away every day – whether that item goes into the garbage, recycling bin, or compost. Then, we challenge your family to come up with ways to reduce that number and see if you can lower it! Anyone who participates will be entered to win a Canadian Geographic prize pack worth an approximate retail value of $300! How low can you go?

Key dates:

Families can participate in this challenge from Monday February 8, 2021 until Friday February 19, 2021 at noon (EST).

How to participate:

  1. Print off the Day 1 Tracking Sheet (or create your own virtually using excel, Google sheets or a platform of your choosing) and have everyone in your family track the number of items that are thrown away. Look at that list together and decide if there are swaps that you can make to lower this number. The swap could be something as simple as washing and reusing plastic resealable bags numerous times instead of throwing them away after one use. Perhaps your household could use microfibre cloths instead of paper towels, or switch to reusable water bottles and travel mugs. Remember – small, no cost swaps do have an impact.
  2. Have your family implement their changes and swaps and use the tracking sheet for Day 2 to see if your family was able to lower the number of items that were thrown out. Day 2 can be done the next day, or a few days later, as long as you submit before the deadline (February 19, 2021)!
  3. Take a picture of one of the swaps your family has done (include yourselves if you like!)
  4. Share what you have learned with us! Submit your picture and number of items by contacting us at [email protected] or leave a reply to our Family Challenge #1 social media posts on Twitter (@Energy_Lit or @CanGeoEdu) or Facebook and Instagram (@CanGeoEdu), using #EnergyDietChallenge. Entries must be received before noon (EST) on Friday, February 19, 2021.
