Green your school!

As Kermit the Frog once sang, it’s not easy bein’ green.

To help make a little easier, Canadian Geographic and Shell Canada introduced the Green Your School Contest this year, which will award $10,000 to one lucky school to reduce its carbon footprint.

It all starts with the 15-point Green Your School challenge. Students are encouraged to reflect on the energy used at their school and determine how to reduce or offset it. Then they select a project that—with a little financial help—could reduce their school’s carbon footprint. Once students have come up with an exceptional idea, they must complete an online application form (outlining the scope of the project, its intended outcomes and a draft budget. All this earns them their 15 points.

After completing the challenge, enthusiastic classes can take it one step further and enter the Green Your School Contest by creating a video about their proposed project to gather public support.

A combination of community votes and evaluation by a panel of judges will determine the winner of the $10,000 prize.

The submission deadline for the Green Your School Contest is April 6, 2014.
