Get Growing

Completed

Description

We have been talking a lot about the Earth for the whole year and discussed about food and air. We decided to try to start some indoor gardens in our own homes for food, beauty and fresh air. Students learned about the life cycle of a plant and it's parts and how to grow a plant. Students then took pictures of the start of their gardens and are updating us with pictures when they can. Students talked about past experiences in gardening and shared the richness and enjoyment they had doing it. Some are finding it hard to see some growth as some have started planting outside and the weather is currently cold. So we discussed about the weather and how plants need warm environments to start growing.

Limited Edition: Game Time!

Completed

Description

We did a quiz game and started to discuss about food waste. After the game, we discussed about how much energy is used to make or deliver this food to us. We talked about why food waste is bad and how to prevent most of it. We did the worksheet, and then did the quiz game again and did much better.

One Hour No Power

Completed

Description

We discussed about air and water and tied into how production of energy has harmful effects from power generating plants such as coal. We discussed how using less energy will reduce the need and therefore reduce the pollution in the air. We brainstormed ideas of what we can do without electricity. Students then took the opportunity to try and challenge themselves to use less electricity and chart times when they did not use any. We reflected the time in minutes rather than hours and tallied it up. As our class is online, we were not able to do it together as we need to use power to communicate in our class. So the students and teachers did the hour of no power throughout the month of February and March. We used an online shared document to continually update our times when we did not use any power.

Take-Home

Completed

Description

We discussed about waste and watched some videos on how waste affects the environment. We discussed about landfills and alternatives we can use. We looked at the global issue with garbage and what happens to garbage in the ocean or when our landfills are full. Students worked with families members to track their waste for a week and charted in down.

What’s Old is New Again

Completed

Description

We continued our discussion about waste and how we could reuse things to create new and different things. We collected and used recycled materials to create puppets and then used any left over materials to create toys and puppets.
