We have been growing plants in the classroom since the beginning of the year. We have observed plants and eve propagated various types of plants such as jade. We found some seeds outside that have already begun to germinate and have planted some inside the classroom. I also showed students the video at this website: https://a.plant-for-the-planet.org/trillion-trees/ We had great discussions about the symbiotic relationship between humans and plants. Students each chose a Canadian plant/tree and studied its lifecycle.
How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?
After completing several other challenges, my students now have a solid understanding of carbon emissions and offsets. We really enjoyed calculating our carbon footprint using the "Energy Star" website. We then discussed ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Our posters show 1 footprint for carbon emissions, and another for carbon offsets.
Limited Edition: Game Time!
OPTION 1: We had a great discussion about food wastage. I used this website: https://en.reset.org/knowledge/global-food-waste-and-its-environmental-impact-09122018 and showed the video there. We discussed local versus exotic fruits and veg, and the resources needed to raise livestock for meat and dairy.
