We have been growing plants in the classroom since the beginning of the year. We have observed plants and eve propagated various types of plants such as jade. We found some seeds outside that have already begun to germinate and have planted some inside the classroom. I also showed students the video at this website: https://a.plant-for-the-planet.org/trillion-trees/ We had great discussions about the symbiotic relationship between humans and plants. Students each chose a Canadian plant/tree and studied its lifecycle.
How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?
After working through several challenges already, the students are now able to understand what is meant by "carbon footprint" and "carbon offset". We had a great discussion about our personal actions and how they impact the environment. Some of our behaviours are easier to change than others. We used the energy star website to calculate our carbon footprint and used the other footprint to find ways to offset our emissions. Great lesson!
Limited Edition: Game Time!
We used this website: https://en.reset.org/knowledge/global-food-waste-and-its-environmental-impact-09122018 We had a great discussion about food wastage and where and when this occurs. From exotic fruits and veg to raising livestock for meat and dairy, wastage happens at many stages. We discussed the need to shop local, and only take what we need.
