A Green-Powered Canada

Students researched alternative sources of energy that we use in Alberta. These were solar farms, wind farms and water dams. They completed research and found the pros and cons of each of these alternative sources and completed a paragraph explaining these sources.

As a class we brainstormed various modes of transportation and their effects on the environment. The students then broke into small groups to further their research on friendly transportation. Some students created google slide presentations, word art and posters. They learned a lot:)

Community Connections

Description

Twice a week, students participate in the school recycling program. On one day, the students must go around and collect mixed recycling and then place it outside for the town collection. Then on another day, the students collect bottles and clean them and the bins. The money has been used to assist with making recycling more accessible for the students from Pre K to Grade 9 in our school.

For this challenge, the students had a discussion of wants versus needs and reflected on the challenges of potential giving up or not using some of our wants. There were many different opinions being shared, but in the end the students realized the importance of not using unnecessary power!

Description

The students explored the process of photosynthesis and the importance of the life cycle of plants. Each student was able to choose either a vegetable or flower seed and watch them sprout!! The students were very excited to watch the growth of their plants; although there were a few that did not sprout. The majority of the students will be taking their plants home to transfer when it get warm enough.

During this challenge the students used the various links to understand how they could reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately help heal the earth. The kids came up with great solutions to try on a daily basis and even are getting their families on board!

Students researched how pencils that they use in school are made through recycled materials. After research, they created a poster showing the steps on how pencils are made through recycled materials.

Students used their artistic abilities and writing skills to create comic strips with important messages regarding the importance of recycling and sustainability. The class brainstormed various areas that people could increase their recycling habits and awareness of the harmful effects of pollution on the earth. They produced beautiful and informative comics, which we are getting made into a book!!

For this challenge the students tracked their waste versus recycled material that they could keep out of the landfills. They realized the importance of using reusable containers, water bottles etc instead of single use plastics.
