The Phantom of the Classroom

Completed

Description

Students were challenged to discover sources of energy in their individual households and locate them on a self-created map of their home. They were asked to colour-code the highest areas of energy consumption (although there was some confusion about whether this was referring specifically to phantom energy or any energy used). We used the calculator from the Quebec Hydro website to calculate phantom energy use in our households. There were items not included on this website however, so we did some research using other sites and found large discrepancies in what a device reportedly used in phantom power. This led to an interesting discussion and comparison of the different numers we were getting. We discussed the legitimacy of the different sites, interpretations of phantom energy and the motive behind the different websites. This turned into a great media literacy discussion as well as a discussion on how statistics can vary and be warped by different interpretations and perspectives. In the end, we stuck with our numbers from the Quebec Hydro site because it was fairly local and presumably would have the best information at hand for these measurements.
