A Green-Powered Canada

Description

We did a class research on what renewable energy is. We looked at the windmill farm which is approximately 40 minutes from our community. We invited a guest speaker to talk about the windfarm. Then students picked a form of energy and did their own research.

We discussed ways of getting around our community and the Gaspe Coast. Then we looked at ways of transportation in cities. Students created posters to represent the different ways and then broke them down into those that were environmentally friendly vs those that were not.

Due to Covid and the restrictions that are placed in our community, the class decided to do a school initiative. They created little posters (in 3 languages) to hang in each classroom, reminding teachers and students to shut the lights off as well as computers that are not in use.

As a class, we discussed which electronics we use the most as well as what uses energy. Each student gave up their own thing for a day. As a class, we stop using the lights in the afternoons because we have huge classroom windows that provide enough lighting.

We had already studied photosynthesis at the beginning of the school year. For this challenge we reviewed it and started growing plants and separating/transplanting plants. We trimmed a plant and put the branches into water to grow new ones. They have started growing roots in water.

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

We looked at what a carbon footprint is. Each student compiled their own lists of factors that contribute to their carbon footprint. We looked at 2 different videos. Students were given a footprint and asked to write ways in which they could help reduce their own carbon footprint.

We watched videos on YouTube and discussed how we could help with food waste. We gave ideas and solutions to each other. We then completed the work sheet. Once we were done, we played charades based on food waste strategies.

One Hour No Power

We spent more time outdoors. (Winter Carnival, gym classes) We kept our lights out and worked without technology in a couple math classes. We are lucky to have huge windows in our class, which makes it possible for us to keep our lights off.

The Phantom of the Classroom

We looked at sources of phantom power within our classroom as well as in the section of our school. Students were excited to track sources of phantom power in their own homes. Each student sketched out their home and pointed out the phantom power locations.

We discussed the best ways that we could, as a class, save power. We made a list of 23 tricks on saving power. we then made individual posters and made a collage of them. They are displayed in the hall for everyone to see!

We collected garbage from our trash can, recycle bin and from our school's kitchen. We decided on the theme "Under Water." Students represented an aquarium, clean rivers and clean oceans.
