We watched a video about sustainable transporation. We used Jamboard to create a list of Eco-friendly ways to travel. Then we added images and labelled our images to share our jamboards with others. We had a discussion about how Covid19 has had a positive impact on the environment with less flights and more people working from home.

My classroom has been participating in the Ontario Battery Recycling Challenge since last October. We have been collecting, counting and prepping batteries to be recycled by Raw Materials Company (RMC). This challenge runs from October to April each school year. My students have made posters and announcements to remind the school body to help recycle batteries properly.

Do You Really Need It?

For homework, students were asked to spend a day giving up technology. They recorded this on Monday in our Google Classroom. They also watched the cartoon to see how to save energy. We had a good discussion about needs and wants.

Get Growing

Description

Our class started to grow green beans and sunflowers. We has to self isolate for two weeks and did not get to track the growth properly. A colleague went into the room two water the plants for us while we were at home. I am hoping you will accept this challenge without the handout provided as student only managed to draw three pictures. We also have a cherry tomato plant we started in December that has produced cherries. The kids learned about the life cycles of the fungus gnats that keep reproducing in our classroom.

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

We watched the video about the carbon monster. We talked about how to reduce our carbon footprints. I modelled how to calculate my carbon footprint for my family household. Then I encouraged students to calculate this with families at home. We completed the carbon footprint activity on the handout provided. Then we displayed these in the hallway for other students to see.

We played a game of Kahoot about food waste after reading a couple of articles together about food waste and watching a video from the City of Toronto website about food waste. Students completed the worksheet about food waste online in our Google Classroom.

Today my students used Pixton comics to create stories about saving energy or conserving water.

Description

My students completed this activity in Google Classroom and saved paper doing so. They kept track with the help of parents of what they put in the compost, recycling and garbage as well as what they reuse each day. My students are great with using reusable lunch bags, water bottles and packing litterless lunches. Once all the students had completed the task, I opened a google sheet for students to enter the data and showed them how easy it is to add up each column using the function within google sheets.

The Phantom of the Classroom

We talked about phantom power. I shared a video from one of my previous classes that was created that explains phantom power. I also shared the video provided in this lesson plan. Then students drew maps of their homes and labled where they found electricity plugged in. As we are currently virtual and working from home, students shared maps with me to add to the google slides.

We are using Flipgrid to make videos from home as our class has been in self isolation for two weeks as a result of a covid case in our classroom. On the Flipgrid videos, students were asked to share 5 ways that they conserve energy. Then we have a whole school Google Slides presentation for sharing morning announcements, O'Canada and the Land Acknowledgement, and we share one video each day of the tips and tricks with the whole school.

Students created images using Google Draw. We used a jamboard to come up with many ideas to help the environment. Then our classroom was closed due to a Covid case so added voice messages to the slides using an app called MOTE. This allowed me to compile all videos into one iMovie.

On World Water Day, we read books related to water such as The Water Princess and One Well. We did research on water related issues and talked about Water Conservation. We completed the water tracking activity in google classroom as we are not virtual due to a positive Covid 19 case in our classroom.

What’s For Lunch?

We watched a couple of videos on food and how it gets to the grocery store. Then we each picked a piece of fruit to research where it comes from. Then we added images our lunch and researched by looking at food labels or searched online where that food comes from. We talked about not wasting food because so much energy goes into bringing food to the grocery stores and to your home. Then we wrote the recipes on how to make our lunch.

Students are learning about structures in Science and reading fairy tales. We used recycled the materials to build a house for the Three Little Pigs.
