Do You Really Need It?

Completed

Description

We looked at how we were using energy (individually) and then expanded to our house. We estimated time using the different items. We then brainstormed ideas as a class to reduce our consumption of energy and made a commitment to try over the weekend. After the weekend we discussed what we did, how it felt and what habits we might keep. We tried to keep ideas actionable for 12-year-olds.

We took the ecological footprint challenge and recorded our number of earths. We then watched a video on climate change and had a class discussion on what we, as 12 year old students, could do to improve upon our numbers. We then re-took the same climate challenge, changing only variables that we had control over (so not houses/transport).

What’s For Lunch?

Description

For this challenge, we watched a video of food scarcity and climate change. We then spoke about the impacts of how food travels to our plate. Once students understood this, we looked at how far food travelled for our favourite meal. Students then had a discussion on how their favourite food might be impacting the globe.
