Students are working in groups to research a renewable energy source. We will use our knowledge to create non-fiction mini-books AND to debate the pros and cons of each source during our upcoming debate unit.

As a whole class, students listed items that require energy in their daily lives after a class discussion about needs vs wants. We then sorted the items and students selected their top five energy consumers. From the list, they selected one to give up for a 24 hour period.

Students eagerly chose from a variety of flower and vegetable seeds, planted them and tended to them over the past few weeks. Some students have brought them home to be planted outdoors one the weather warms up!

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

Description

We completed both options for this activity! After watching a video and defining carbon footprint, the class used a Venn Diagram to compare our carbon footprints with Salva Dut's , the protagonist from A Long Walk to Water, a book which we have read together as a class. We then used an online calculator to calculate an average Canadian kid and Salva. What noticed that many of the questions in the online calculator did not apply to Salva's life in South Sudan, and that it was not create an accurate portrait. His footprint would be even smaller than what was generated!

One Hour No Power

Description

Students have been eager all year to keep lights and power off, the main problem was remembering to record all the hours we actually logged! Students were happy to read and work without lights. The greatest challenge was for the teacher to not rely on the Smartboard for lessons.
