We watched a couple of videos on green energy. We then chose one of the energy sources, completed some research and then created a presentation to share our findings with another class.

As a class we brainstormed what types of mobility are available in our community and then discussed those modes that are best for the environment. We then researched smart mobility tips. Finally, we chose a tip and created a poster to display in the school.

Description

First, we brainstormed what energy-saving initiatives we could complete in our school that have not been done recently. We then chose one - doing lessons outdoors to reduce electricity use and utilize natural lighting. Second, the class was divided into several groups - 1. made posters to put up in the school, 2. - made a presentation to give to classrooms, 3. - created announcements for the school announcements and 4. - creating a survey for teacher to fill out. Finally, we checked in with classrooms to see what activities they completed outdoors over a two week period.

Do You Really Need It?

Description

We talked about the difference between a want and a need. Then we filled in all of the devices that we use in a day that use electricity. We chose one of the devices that we would go without one day on the weekend. We then had a class discussion on Monday to discuss how it went.

We watched a documentary on food waste titled "Just Eat It". We then filled in the handout. Finally, we split the class into two groups and played a game of charades. We filled in the PDF with OrbitNote and the annotations do not show up unless you have the app installed. I have had to take pictures of the PDFs.

Description

We planted several seeds (bean and peas) into planters that we created from 2L bottles. We then observed them over a 3 week period, drawing pictures and writing notes on what we saw. We then discussed carbon offsets, read an article (https://www.nature.org/en-us/what-we-do/our-insights/perspectives/carbon-offsets-markets-illustrated/) and watched a video.

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

Description

We watched a short video that explained what a carbon footprint is. We then completed a survey (WWF UK) to see how we match up with the world average. We wrote down 5 things that we can do to reduce our carbon footprint. Finally, we created a piece of media to inform another class on how to reduce their carbon footprint.

One Hour No Power

Description

We brainstormed as a class ways that we could learn without using power. We are fortunate to have a lot of windows and can use natural light on bright days. We also have a large yard to do learning outdoors. Students were excited to not use any power during these periods.

We brainstormed topics that we could create a comic strip about, that we could share with other classrooms. We then created a comic strip using an online comic creating tool. We then shared the comics with other classes in our school.

We watched a documentary on household waste titled " The Clean Bin Project" to raise our awareness of the problem of waste in our lives. We then completed the tracking form for one week, recording the number of items put in the garbage and the number of items kept out of the garbage.

The Phantom of the Classroom

Description

We watched a video on Phantom Energy in our homes. We then related what we learned to our school and what phantom energy would look like at Aberarder Central. We then were assigned to a room in the school to complete an energy audit of phantom energy. Last, we compiled a total of phantom energy for the school and what it costs the school at today's electricity rate.

Description

The class brainstormed topics for the PSA. Groups were randomly chosen and students created scripts for their PSA. They then shot the videos and used iMovie to put together a finished PSA. We watched all of the videos and voted on which one would represent our class.

We completed the handout recording our water usage for one day. Then we talked about realistic ways to reduce our water usage. We then tried some of them for the second day and then recorded our water usage.

We watched a short video on the carbon footprint of food. We learned that it is better to buy local. Students then mapped out where their lunch came from on a world map.

We planned a sculpture that could be created using recycled materials. We assembled all of the materials and spent an hour creating our sculpture. We then set up a gallery in the school to share our creations with everyone.
