A Green-Powered Canada

Completed

Description

Last year, one of my students did a research project on renewable energy sources and I used that powerpoint to teach my current students about renewable energy. This year, we also had several virtual webinars related to renewable energy since this is an area where our province is severely lacking.

Get Growing

Completed

Description

We studied the important role plants play in sequestering carbon and then we planted seeds and put them under grow lights in the school. Some of the plants have been moved to the school greenhouse already and some of them will stay in the greenhouse, while others will be planted in the school garden. We will also be planting the sunflowers and pollinators in the pollinator garden once it is warm enough.

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

Completed

Description

All of my classes completed a Carbon Footprint Calculator online and then we discussed why they received their results. We also discussed the fact that even though personal actions can have an environmental impact, it is also important that we try to make changes on a bigger, systemic scale. Here are the two different calculators we used: https://app.projectneutral.org/measure-impact https://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en (this was the best one I have used)

What’s Old is New Again

Completed

Description

Students were encouraged to find a use for recycled items. There were a lot of different ideas. One student used an empty juice can and a lightbulb to prevent the water in his chicken coop from freezing. Another students made a pen holder out of recycled soup cans. Our class also used empty coffee cups that we found on our community clean up to plan beans and distribute them around the school for a bean growing class challenge.
