We discussed the difference between a need and a want. Then made of list of things that we do/use that use a lot of energy and seperated them into needs or wants. Students then filled out the "Do You Really Need It?" worksheet. The next day, we talked about how it was giving up that "want".

How Big Are Your Carbon Feet?

We started by watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sglectkM0p4. I then explained what carbon footprint meant and I calculated my own carbon footprint using this website: https://energyiq.canadiangeographic.ca/beyond-the-classroom/survey/. We then completed the "How Big Are Your Carbon Feet" worksheet by writing something that we can do to have a smaller carbon footprint. Once students finished their worksheet they used the same website to calculate their own carbon footprint and wrote it on their worksheet.

One Hour No Power

This challenge was fun! Students came up with a list of things we can do in the classroom that involve no power and we did them! It was fun keeping track of when and why we use power. This is a challenge that we will continue after the Classroom Energy Diet is finished.

We watched videos about waste and how we can reduce our everyday waste. We discussed waste-free lunches as well as how to compost. Students took home the take-home challenge and completed it on their own. Unfortunately, after 6 weeks of being assigned this challenge with many reminders, only one student completed the challenge.

The Phantom of the Classroom

We watched a video and talked about where the phantom power in our classroom is. Students then drew a map of the classroom identifying the phantom power and all the plugs/electronics we use that waste energy. We then discussed some of the phantom power in our households and discussed ways in which we can get rid of the phantoms!

After leaning about energy awareness since March, each studnet had to come up with one thing they can do to reduce the amount of energy they use. Each student created a visual poster that we are going to hang in the school hallway for everyone to see.

We watched my class' video from last year and videos that were already posted on the Classrooom Energy Diet Challenge Website. We brainstormed ideas and students decided that they wanted to create a video that taught others about what they can do to save energy. They dictated tips that they wanted to showcase while I type what they said. Students helped me film and edit the video using iMovie.
