Do You Really Need It?
Completed
Description
Day 1-We talked about things that are wants vs things we need to stay alive and healthy. The children brainstormed ideas and had disagreements and discussions. We watched a video on you-tube. The children were given a picture and had to decide if it was a want or a need and then place it in the right category on our chart. We also played a want/need sorting game on the SmartBoard. Day 2-The next morning we discussed things that use energy in the classroom and whether it was a want or a need. We decided that while we all like to play with the light table we don’t need it to get through our day. After lunch we discussed it and many friends hadn’t noticed that it was not turned on or just used it as a table without the light.
Get Growing
Completed
Description
We have been growing bean plants and other veggies and fruits, talking about the parts of a plant and what plants need to live. We have brought our outdoor planter inside to transplant our seedlings and beans. One of our students knew that plants get food from the sun and we talked about photosynthesis briefly. Some children shared about gardens at home, composting and worms. We decided we would have a salad at the end of June if our plants are big enough.

The Phantom of the Classroom
Completed
Description
We have been talking about/doing activities about energy all week. Today we watched a you tube cartoon about wasting energy and why it is bad. Next we collaborated to make a map of the classroom. The kids were very engaged and excited to find things in the room that used electricity. They found things that surprised me such as the phone and CD player. We talked about how things could use energy even when they were turned off and looked at a chart. It was a bit challenging for some but others seemed to get it.
