As a class we watched the various renewable and non renewable energy sources we use. We watched a video on renewable energy sources and students chose an energy source and completed research in groups of 3. They created a google slide presentation and presented to the class.

Before the March Break we participated in the Big Crunch and today we participated in the Great Gulp. We learned the importance of buying local healthy foods for the Big Crunch and conserving water in Peel. The students loved watching the Big Crunch virtual presentation.

Game Time!

Description

We played an interactive online game called Kahoot. For this particular game, students answered questioned about food waste. Students also discussed food waste and its connection to energy. We began using a compost bin in our class and encouraged students to utilize it on a daily basis. We also brainstormed ways to reduce waste by using the compost bin, parents can plan ahead when thinking of food preparation and meals and storing foods the right way to help them last longer.

Get Growing

Description

We registered to grow tomatoes through Tomatosphere. We were excited when we received our tomato seeds. I collected gatorade bottles at home to use as the tomato seed plant holders. They were cut in half in order to give the seeds space to grow. Students put the soil and seeds into the gatorade bottles and watered them as needed. We decided to place them near the windowsill where they would get the most sunlight. By using gatorade bottles, we continued our theme of recycling items within our homes. We watched and observing the process of how seeds grow.

As a class we discussed ways we can make a difference and decrease our carbon footprint. We also discovered there a variety of ways to conserve energy including reduce, reuse and recycle.

One Hour No Power

As a class we talked about how much energy we use everyday. We decided it was important for us to do our part in helping the environment. One way was to reduce the amount of power we use daily. Each student gave up using something powered by energy and wanted to take it further and do something as a class. We chose to use no power for an hour everyday in the month of March. We will continue this challenge after March Break.

We discussed energy-related issues as a class. Students chose one issue and made a comic strip using Storyboard That. The students wanted to share their knowledge with younger students so they read their comics to another class. Some students made a comic book.

Students were asked to challenge themselves to reduce waste at home by either recycling, composting and replacing single-use items with reusable options. The challenge began March 7th and continued until March 11th.

The Phantom of the Classroom

We have been discussing phantom power in school and at home. Students were asked to go around their home and find examples of phantom power. They created maps to show phantom power in their homes. We went on a walk around the school looking for examples of items that use standby power. There are many ways to conserve energy just be unplugging objects that aren't being used.

Tips and Tricks

Description

As a class we decided to make students and staff at school aware of tips and tricks to conserve energy. We came up with a variety of ways to save energy including the idea of Walk to School Fridays. We created posters and encouraged everyone to save our earth by walking to school. Posters are displayed around the school and classrooms. We also participated in Lights out during Lunch campaign. Posters were created by students and distributed throughout classes.

Water Works

We brainstormed ways that we use water. We discussed how much water is wasted and how precious water is to the earth and ourselves. We then calculated how much water we use in one day. We had a discussion based on those results and then on day 2 we completed the second part to see if there was a difference in the amount of water consumption.

What’s For Lunch?

Description

We discussed foods that are grown locally and where farms are located closest to our school. We discovered that there are alot of farms near us. We then discussed locally grown foods in grocery store flyers. We looked through a variety of flyers to see which contained foods that were grown in Ontario and surrounding area. We found some produce in the grocery store flyers in Superstore, Longos, and No Frills. We came up with recipes using the locally grown produce. We will create a slideshow presentation to share with another class.

What’s Old is New Again

Description

We decided to begin saving objects in our home and school that could be used to make art projects, models or paintings. We want to control how much garbage we make and use those materials to create something new from something that is old. We listened and watched the a story called "Something from Nothing" which is about an elderly man using a old blanket and transforming it into a variety of things. With all the objects we created art projects and models.
