Description

Students did research into a renewable for of energy (Wind, solar, hydro or geothermal) in preparation for our debate. The debate was held with students defending their renewable energy. After the debate, students completed reflection question about their choice for energy in Ontario.

For this challenge, we discussed the impact that our transportation has on our carbon footprint. Students then went to work researching ways that we can improve our transportation to make it more efficient and reduce our carbon footprint. They created posters or slide presentations to explain what they had learned. We discussed each tip together as a class.

Description

Our class along with a grade 2 class in our school, participated in the city of Brampton community clean-up program. We went with the other class to a local park and picked up garbage from the area. We discussed the importance of participating in community efforts for the earth and to reduce our impact on the environment.

Description

For this challenge, students worked in groups doing research on different topics related to energy and climate change. They all decided to create kahoots to be played in class. We played the games altogether. The different topics of the games were renewable vs non-renewable energy, air and water pollution, and carbon footprint. We took photos of the Kahoolawe in action.

Our class discussed the concept of photosynthesis and how plants can help us with our pollution problems. We did some planting and watch over the next few days as our plants grew. Students took their tomato plants home to continue growing, hopefully. Students completed the plant observation worksheets.

Our class discussed the concept of a carbon footprint and we calculated our own footprint. Then we discussed what impacts our carbon footprints. Finally, students researched ways to reduce our footprint and together we create this awesome carbon footprint display in our class!!

Students used comic creator to send a message about energy use and our carbon footprint. Topics included phantom power, our carbon footprint, and cleaning up litter and trash.

The Phantom of the Classroom

Description

Students learned about phantom power and we discussed it as a class. We used a watt meter to calculate phantom power in the class. Students created maps of the class and the school and tried to calculate phantom power across the school.
